Seit einem Vierteljahrhundert bringt das EU-Art-Network internationale Kunstschaffende nach Burgenland. Mehr als 350 Künstlerinnen und Künstler aus den Bereichen Bildende Kunst, Literatur und Musik haben in dieser Zeit Spuren hinterlassen – mit Ausstellungen, Projekten und gesellschaftspolitischen Debatten.
Doch anstatt sich im Jubiläumsjahr zurückzulehnen, stellen die Kuratoren Wolfgang und Horst Horwath die unbequemen Fragen: Was ist Kunst? Was kann Kunst? Und wozu Kunst überhaupt?
Antworten darauf gibt es viele – von Aristoteles bis Joseph Beuys. Letzterer brachte es bekanntlich auf die knappe Formel: „Kunst = Kapital“. Aber gilt das heute noch? Ist Kunst frei, kreativ und revolutionär – oder längst Teil eines globalen Systems aus Geld, Mäzenen und Marktmechanismen?
Im Symposium 2025 wird dieser Spannungsbogen ausgeleuchtet. Besonders die Zeichnung steht im Fokus: direkt, spontan und, wie Kunsthistoriker Uwe M. Schneede formulierte, „fern von der Gefahr der Ausbeutung durch das Kommerzielle“.
Mit dabei: 26 Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer, unterstützt von zahlreichen regionalen und nationalen Partnern. Ein Zeichen dafür, dass Kunst nicht nur eine ästhetische, sondern auch eine gesellschaftliche Kraft ist.
Denn wie der Maler Renato Guttuso sagte: „Die Kunst ist auch revolutionäres Tun.“ Und vielleicht ist genau das die Antwort, die 25 Jahre EU-Art-Network jetzt feiern.

For a quarter of a century, the EU-Art-Network has been bringing international artists to Burgenland. More than 350 artists from the fields of visual arts, literature, and music have left their mark during this time – with exhibitions, projects, and socio-political debates. What can art do? And what is the purpose of art in the first place? There are countless answers – from Aristotle to Joseph Beuys. The latter famously condensed it into the concise formula: “Art = Capital.” But does that still hold true today? Is art free, creative, and revolutionary – or has it long since become part of a global system of money, patrons, and market mechanisms? The 2025 Symposium explores this tension. The focus lies particularly on drawing: direct, spontaneous, and, as art historian Uwe M. Schneede once put it, “far from the danger of being exploited by commercial interests.” Participating are 26 artists, supported by numerous regional and national partners. A sign that art is not only an aesthetic force, but also a social one. As painter Renato Guttuso said: “Art is also a revolutionary act.” And perhaps that is exactly the answer being celebrated after 25 years of the EU-Art-Network.
